Smith Center Basketball Floor

This renovation project was scheduled to occur in three phases: Phase I January-April 2009 focused on minor structural infill and preparation for Phase II construction; Phase II April-November 2009 included a life safety systems upgrade and major renovation of the interior, including natatorium and pool, lower level locker rooms, conference and fitness rooms, and a new academic support suite. Phase II also provided new seating and finishes in the arena as well as a new courtside members club; life safety and HVAC improvements to the Athletic Director’s suite, and a renovated Athletic Director’s Club on the 3rd level. Phase III began shortly after Phase II finished with substantial exterior completion anticipated in fall 2010 and final project completion in 2011. Phase III work focuses on exterior renovations and interior spaces such as the lobby and box office, a new concessions area, and the daily entry at 22nd and G Streets.

2011

August 30, 2011
With the completion of the exterior hardscape and landscaping work the final phase of the Charles E. Smith Center Renovation was substantially completed in late August. All Exterior hardscape and landscape work is in accordance with GW's Streetscape Plan (included in the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan) which calls for brick sidewalks on the campus east/west streets and concrete sidewalks on north/south streets. Additional streetscape elements include street tree boxes with fencing, bike racks, benches, and trashcans. This is the final update for the Charles E. July 31, 2011
Stone work on the building’s southwest corner (F Street) is complete. On the northwest side (G Street), granite steps are installed with coping installation underway. Concrete work at the northwest corner is underway as well as grading. Upcoming activities include installation of brick pavers, railings and landscaping. Ongoing deliveries, concrete trucks, and intermittent closures will impact pedestrian and vehicle traffic on F and G Streets and at the west alley. Exterior hardscape and landscaping work is in accordance with GW’s Streetscape Plan (included in the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan) which calls for brick sidewalks on the campus east/west streets and concrete sidewalks on north/south streets.

Stone work on the building’s southwest corner (F Street) is nearing completion. On the northwest side (G Street), excavation and waterproofing along north wall is complete. Concrete work at the northwest corner is underway as well as stone work and surface drainage systems. Ongoing deliveries, concrete trucks, and intermittent closures will impact pedestrian and vehicle traffic on F and G Streets and at the west alley. Exterior hardscape and landscaping work is in accordance with GW’s Streetscape Plan (included in the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan) which calls for brick sidewalks on the campus east/west streets and concrete sidewalks on north/south streets.

Concrete work on the building’s southwest corner (F Street) is complete and stone work has commenced. On the northwest side (G Street), excavation and waterproofing along north wall is nearing completion. Backfilling of the area is anticipated to complete in the first weeks of July. Concrete work at the northwest corner is underway and will be followed by stone work. Ongoing deliveries, concrete trucks and intermittent closures will impact pedestrian and vehicle traffic on F and G Streets and at the west Alley.  Exterior hardscape and landscaping work is in accordance with GW’s Streetscape Plan (included in the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan) which calls for brick sidewalks on the campus east/west streets and concrete sidewalks on north/south streets.

Demolition of the exterior hardscape and landscape upgrades to F and G Street are underway. Demolition at the southwest entrance (F Street) is complete and activities on the northwest side (G street) are underway. Preparations for footing excavation and pours are underway on F street. Underground electrical work for new street lights on G street is underway. Exterior hardscape and landscaping work is in accordance with GW’s Streetscape Plan (included in the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan) which calls for brick sidewalks on the campus east/west streets and concrete sidewalks on north/south streets.

Commencement events were held successfully this weekend at the Smith Center. Exterior hardscape and landscape work will commence as outlined in the May 1st update. With the majority of interior work on the 22nd Street side of the exterior hardscape and landscaping improvements completed, the Smith Center is ready for GW's annual commencement weekend (the Smith Center will be fully operational for the event). Exterior hardscape and landscape upgrades to F and G Street areas will begin after commencement. Exterior hardscape and landscaping work is in accordance with GW’s Streetscape Plan (included in the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan) which calls for brick sidewalks on the campus east/west streets and concrete sidewalks on north/south streets. Upgrades will also include an ADA compliant entry ramp on 22nd Street and granite planters at key entries. Remaining interior work includes adjustment to finishes and installation of donor recognition and branding elements.

Work will begin as early as this week to renovate the exterior hardscape of the Charles E. Smith Center along 22nd Street. This work will include removal of existing exterior concrete hardscape (sidewalks, steps, ramps, etc.) which will require intermittent periods of jack hammering through March and into April. Work will begin at the north east entrance (22nd and G Streets) and proceed south to F Street.  Temporary sidewalk closures may be required at intermittent periods during this work. Replacement of F and G Street hardscape will occur after commencement. All work will occur during work hours legally permitted by DC Government, 7am-7pm Monday through Saturday.

Beginning November 1 and lasting several weeks, work on various utilities of the project’s southern side will require the temporary closures of adjacent sidewalk between 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Additionally, between November 8-19, one lane of F street will temporarily closed for approximately three days. To facilitate the final phase of construction on the building exterior this summer the following measures will be in place:
**Removal of existing exterior precast concrete panels (as seen in photo to right) will at times produce significant noise during work hours of 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Saturday.
**North and south parking lanes adjacent to the building are closed between 23rd and 22nd Streets West side of 22nd St between F and G Streets is closed except during rush hour.
**Sidewalks will be intermittently closed as construction activities necessitate.
**Fencing, work trailers and other equipment will be in place throughout the summer.
**Certain entrances to the Smith Center also will be temporarily closed or relocated.

Installation of limestone on all corners is complete with final caulking and miscellaneous finishing underway. Curtain wall installation continues, including: installation of trim pieces, caulking of joints and installation of metal panels on the east elevation (followed by west and south elevations). Installation of roof’s top layer and detailing of curbs and parapets is underway. Installation of east entrance canopy glass is anticipated to occur this week. Daily sidewalk intermittent closures on sidewalks adjacent to site will continue to occur workdays (Monday to Saturday) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or as needed. Curtain wall installation continues on the north, east and south elevations (installation of metal panels on west elevation will occur later in the fall). Interior work includes final touches in preparation of punch list work, commissioning of the HVAC and painting of the auxiliary gyms.

Installation of the new scoreboard continues. Installation of limestone on northeast and northwest corners is complete with final caulking in the near future, work on southeast corner is proceeding and work has begun on the southwest corner. Curtain wall installation continues on the north, east and south elevations (installation of metal panels on west elevation will occur later in the fall). Daily sidewalk intermittent closures on sidewalks adjacent to site will continue to occur workdays (Monday to Saturday) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or as needed. Interior work includes: polishing of terrazzo floor, completion of ceramic tile and interior painting and placement of millwork.

Installation of the new scoreboard has commenced and is anticipated for completion later this month. Installation of limestone on northeast and northwest corners is nearing completion and work on southeast corner is proceeding. Curtain wall installation continues on the north, east and south elevations. Interior finishes including terrazzo floor, ceramic tile and painting are ongoing as well as installation of rubber gym floor track.

July 30, 2010
Installation of limestone on northeast is near completion and continues on northwest corner -- work on southeast corner is expected to begin next week. Structural steel on 22nd Street and south facades is near completion and continues at southwest corner. Curtain wall installation on north elevation is ongoing and is now underway on 22nd Street facade. Interior finishes including terrazzo floor, ceramic tile and painting are ongoing.

July 16, 2010
Exterior work includes continued installation of limestone at northeast and northwest corners. Structural steel is progressing on 22nd Street on east and south facades. Curtain wall installation on north elevation is ongoing. Interior work at box office and concessions areas includes framing, mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins. Due to crane work, the 2200 block of F Street will be closed between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday, July 17.

July 1, 2010
Installation of limestone at building's northeast corner has commenced. Structural steel installation is progressing around the building with concentration the next 2 weeks on the east and south façades. Painting of exterior masonry continues, moving to west facade. Ongoing interior work at box office and concessions area includes framing, mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins. Delivery of penthouse air handling units is planned for Saturday, July 10th and may require temporary closure of adjacent G Street.

June 3, 2010
Removal of pre-cast exterior panels on the southwest side of project site will require partial closure of F Street at interim times during the day and portions of G Street on June 5. Sidewalk protection originally scheduled for installation in late May will now occur next week. Other activities for this week include removal of the east canopy, additional exterior demolition and structural steel erection. 

June 1, 2010
Removal of air handling units and duct work from site rooftop will require use of a crane on Thursday June 3, 2010. This activity may require temporary closure at various times on June 3 of the sidewalk on the north side of G Street in the 2200 block (directly adjacent to project site).

The closing of the 2200 block of G Street on Saturday/May 29 has been postponed to Saturday/June 5 (replacing previously planned closure of F Street for that day). Demolition on the exterior continues and structural steel components are being installed. Interior demolition continues with focus on second and third floor east. Work will not occur Monday May 31 due to Memorial Day holiday. Sidewalk protection will be erected June 2-4, starting on the 22nd Street side of the project and then progressing to G Street and finishing on F Street.

Permits for Phase III design of the exterior and associated interior components are expected to be issued in the coming week. In anticipation of receiving the permits, site fencing erection has begun to enclose the site for the safe demolition of selected façade elements. Interior branding work is ongoing including final design and fabrication of team spirit and record boards.

Site mobilization has commenced in anticipation of Phase III construction which will transform the building exterior and associated interior spaces. Over the coming months, parking lanes and sidewalks adjacent to the Smith Center will be closed intermittently.

March 24, 2010
Phase III renovation work of the Charles E. Smith Center will commence in coming weeks. Upon receipt of work permit, site mobilization will begin, including the following parking lane closures:

south and north sides of the 2200 block of F Street; 2) west side of 22nd Street between F & G Streets except during morning rush hour for vehicular use.

Sidewalk protection will be erected next week starting on the 22nd Street side of the project and then progressing to G Street and finishing on F Street.

To facilitate the use of a crane, the 2200 block F Street is scheduled to be closed on Saturday/May 22. Removal of precast concrete panels on east side was completed last week and work on west side panels continues. Bulk interior demolition will commence Tuesday May 18.

May 5, 2010
The final phase of construction on the building’s exterior is underway. So as to facilitate the use of a crane, the west lane of 22nd Street is anticipated to be closed this Saturday/May 8 and the 2200 block F Street is scheduled to be closed on Saturday/May 22. Recent activities include:

A heavy duty tarp will contain any debris which may be dislodged during exterior demolition. Installation of this barrier may require temporary closures of the midblock alley on Wednesday April 28, 2010.

Early morning work will occur on the 22nd Street facade where impact to our residents should be lessened.

At the Townhouse Row alley the contractor will be utilizing a lift and hand held chipping hammers to demolish the alley way panels. So as to reduce noise impacts, work is anticipated to be limited between 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The midblock alley will also be closed intermittently to allow for removal of debris.

Other construction related activities include:

Phase II construction reached substantial completion August 24 with the exception of the Athletic Director’s Club and Colonials Club, which are expected to deliver in mid-September and mid-fall prior to the first basketball game, respectively. Additional punch list walkthroughs are underway on the lower level spaces, with corrective work to follow in coming weeks. Freshman Convocation occurred August 30 and was the debut of the renovated interior to 2,500 students and parents.

The majority of Phase II work is nearing completion. New arena seating will be completed this week with final cleaning and preparation work to accommodate GW’s annual Freshman Convocation on August 30, 2009. Work continues on schedule for level one and a punch list is being developed.

August 12, 2009
Work continues in all renovation areas with all construction trades working simultaneously. Final floor finishes are in progress on the arena floor. Bath fixtures are being installed on all floors and work is underway on ceilings and finishes. Tile work continues in the lower level natatorium.

Miscellaneous concrete pads for mechanical equipment are being poured. Approved wall close-ins are progressing, as are plumbing rough-ins on arena level. Sprinkler installation main loop is complete, with branches and core distribution to follow. Arena floor layout is in progress.

Structural prep and balcony extension work continues. Painting of ceilings continues in the arena and is complete in the natatorium. Framing for Level 1 and the Athletic Director’s Club is nearing completion, as is natatorium ductwork. Installation of arena wood floor is in progress.

Work continues to prepare the Smith Center for commencement activities. No construction activities will take place during commencement weekend. Parking on the north side of F Street adjacent to the south side of the building (2200 block of F Street) will be temporarily unavailable due to commencement-related deliveries. 

May 6, 2009
Work continues to prepare the Smith Center for GW’s May 15-17 annual commencement activities, including installation of temporary stage and carpet. No construction activities will take place commencement weekend. Parking on the north side of F Street adjacent to the south side of the building (2200 block of F Street) will be temporarily unavailable as meters have been reserved for trucks providing equipment for commencement. During upcoming construction, the curb lane on F Street between 22nd & 23rd will continue to be used intermittently for concrete and material deliveries. Saturday work is expected to continue after commencement.

April 27, 2009
Upcoming work at the Smith Center will continue occasional use of the curb lane on F Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets for concrete and material deliveries. Demolition and layout for mechanical/electrical/plumbing (MEP) rough-ins continues in selected areas. Planning is underway to prepare the facility for annual commencement activities to occur the weekend of May 15-17. Saturday work is likely to continue before and after commencement weekend.

Upcoming work at the Smith Center will continue with temporary use of the curb lane on F Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets for concrete and material deliveries. Demolition, layout for mechanical/electrical/plumbing (MEP) rough-ins, and wall layout continues in selected areas. Saturday work is likely to continue. Sustainability alert: This project is actively separating construction waste from recyclable materials so you may notice dumpsters located on site that are designated for recycled materials only.

Upcoming work at the Smith Center will require temporary use of the curb lane on F Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets for concrete and material deliveries. Demolition of the interior partitions will continue; and once completed, the setting of sub-slab piping and infrastructure will commence.
