August 1, 2013
Since the Law Learning Center and G Street Garage achieved substantial completion in early May, work has focused on remaining punch list items, commissioning, and installation of furniture and audio/visual equipment.

May 15, 2013
The parking offices located on Level P1 are nearing completion with Transportation and Parking staff beginning to relocate to the space. The Law School’s learning center spaces beneath the Plaza Level have achieved substantial completion of general construction, with fixed and loose furniture installations remaining. The green roof on the top surface of the above grade entry pavilion structure was recently installed. This new green space joins the other two green roof sections on this – the plaza/ground level grassy areas on each side of the entry pavilion which are the “roof” to the below grade parking structure and were completed in April. A blue light phone station (operated by GWPD as part of its crime prevention efforts) will soon be installed at the Plaza Level.

Learning Center spaces beneath the Plaza Level will continue construction through the spring. Permanent covered bicycle racks at the Plaza Level are available for use. Landscaping has been completed. The G Street Parking Garage located on the site is open and in operation. Permanent bicycle racks have been installed at the Plaza Level, and will be available for use later in March. Landscaping continues at Plaza Level, plantings await spring growing season. Plaza Level Entrance Pavilion and elevator lobby are in use. Repaving of G Street sidewalk has been completed. Interior construction of the Learning Center spaces beneath the Plaza Level will continue through the spring.

Parking Garage is open and in operation. Temporary bicycle parking racks have been installed in the B1 level of the garage. Construction of the permanent bicycle parking structure along with landscaping continues at Plaza Level. Landscape plantings await spring growing season. The container installed next to Tonic Restaurant for storing rain water to be used as landscaping irrigation is being enclosed with UV protective covering. Plaza Level Entrance Pavilion, elevator lobbies at Plaza Level, and below grade parking levels are nearing completion. Repaving of G Street sidewalk has been completed. Interior construction of the Learning Center spaces beneath the Plaza Level continues and will proceed through this spring.

January 9, 2013
With initial pre-opening inspections successfully completed, it is anticipated the below-grade parking structures will be operational within coming weeks. Temporary bicycle parking racks have been installed with construction of the permanent bicycle parking structure along with landscaping at Plaza Level proceeding. Elevator installation and entrance lobby at Plaza Level Pavilion are nearing completion. Repaving of G Street sidewalk is nearing completion. Relining of an existing sewer below the alley pavement will be completed within the next week. Interior construction of the Learning Center spaces beneath the Plaza Level continues and will proceed through this spring.

2012

December 19, 2012
Recognizing the importance of the upcoming December 12-21 Final Exams period, the university is extending the prohibition on construction activities likely to be exceptionally noisy to 9:00am on weekdays at the sites for all of GW’s major  construction projects, including the Science and Engineering Hall site. Workers can work from 7–9:00am during this time, but the work may not include activities that are defined in this letter to students (.pdf) dating December 10, 2012 – regular work may commence after 9:00 a.m. Also, work will not occur at these sites on Saturday December 15, 2012.

Permanent power has been energized. Work to rebuild the alley between F, G, 20th and 21st Streets is completed. Information technology services are being installed. Parking equipment installation is nearing completion. Waterproofing work is being completed. Masonry walls are being completed. Fire protection sprinkler work is nearing completion. Electrical and mechanical work continues, including testing of systems. Landscaping work on the plaza and along G Street is proceeding. Painting in parking areas is nearing completion. Domestic water service is scheduled to be connected the week of December 26. 

Unless otherwise needed, the next project update for this site will be posted the first week of January 2013.

November 28, 2012
PEPCO is completing tie in of permanent power this week. The widening and paving of the alley behind the Support Building (2025 F Street, NW) dock is being completed. Information technology services are being installed. Parking equipment is scheduled for installation in early December. Waterproofing work is nearing completion and plaza concrete topping out is continuing across the garage on ground level. Masonry walls are in progress and nearing completion. Fire protection sprinkler work is nearing completion. Work continues on electrical fixtures, electrical wiring, and mechanical work. Painting is in progress, including accent colors to designate parking levels.

November 1, 2012
PEPCO will be completing tie-in of electrical power in the vaults behind Support Building in coming weeks. Also the alley between the Support Building dock and 21st Street is scheduled to be repaved before the middle of November. Washington Gas will be installing natural gas service to the building in G St from 20th Street. Work is proceeding on the site’s future truck dock along the southwest corner of project site near the alley and 21st Street. Horizontal waterproofing and Plaza concrete topping is proceeding across the top of the garage on ground level. Masonry walls are in progress throughout the project site. Electrical fixtures, electrical wiring, and mechanical work continue.

The tower crane will be removed this Saturday, Nov 3. To accomplish, G St will be closed between 20th and 21st Streets Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM and Saturday from 7 AM to 7 PM.

October 15, 2012
The PEPCO electrical work is expected to continue in the alley through mid- to-late October. PEPCO will be installing wiring from 19th Street and will be placing equipment in vaults behind the Support Building. Also in the alley a section of sewer between the Support dock and 21st St. is scheduled to be replaced toward the end of the month. Construction trailers have been removed from G Street so that utility work within that street can proceed. Work is proceeding on the site’s future truck dock along the southwest corner of project site near the alley and 21st Street. Horizontal waterproofing is proceeding across the top of the garage on ground level. Columns and perimeter walls are nearing completion and the concrete subcontractor is demobilizing.  Structural steel framing is nearing completion. Masonry walls are in progress throughout the project site. Electrical fixtures, electrical wiring, and mechanical work continue.

October 1, 2012
The PEPCO electrical work is expected to continue in the alley through mid-October. Access to the alleyway has shifted from 20th Street to 21st Street, and will remain that way for the next couple of weeks. Three of the site trailers will begin to be removed this week in preparation for upcoming utility work on G Street related to this project which will begin in early October and continue into November. Work will begin on the site’s future truck dock along the southwest corner of project site near the alley and 21st Street. Perimeter water proofing completed and horizontal waterproofing is beginning across the top of the garage on ground level. Columns and perimeter walls are nearing completion. Plaza level structure is nearing completion. Masonry walls are in progress throughout the project site. Electrical fixtures, electrical wiring, and mechanical work continue.

Construction is proceeding in all areas of the project site. Perimeter waterproofing is nearing completion. Plaza level structure is nearing completion. Columns and perimeter walls are nearing completion. Masonry walls are in progress throughout the project site. Electrical fixtures, electrical wiring, and mechanical work continues. The PEPCO electrical work is expected to continue in the alley through mid October. Access to the Support Building loading dock is being switched from 21st to 20th Streets effective today September 18th.

September 4, 2012
Construction is proceeding in all areas of the project site. Perimeter waterproofing is nearing completion. The remaining portion of the entrance ramp from the alley will be cast this week. Plaza level forming and casting is in process. Column, perimeter wall, and interior wall construction continues throughout the site. Masonry walls are in progress throughout the project site. The PEPCO electrical work is expected to continue in the alley through mid October.  

August 15, 2012
Construction proceeds across all areas of the site. Concrete work on the lower level slab is scheduled for completion this week. Blind side perimeter waterproofing is nearing completion. Column, perimeter wall, and interior wall construction is in progress. Installation of plumbing pipes above parking levels three, four, and five is in progress. Electrical wire pulling continues, as does Pepco electrical work on the 20th Street side of the alley.

July 30, 2012
The one level of below grade programming space (located above parking level P1) is under construction. Piping for plumbing, fire protection, and installation of electrical wiring is occurring on the lowest three below grade levels. Perimeter waterproofing continues. Perimeter walls continue atop cast portions of P1 parking level as does construction of interior walls. The PEPCO work scheduled to take place in the alley is beginning. During this time the alley will remain open, with access to the dock from one end of the alley.

Square 103/July 19, 2012: Parking level one is under construction. Piping for plumbing and fire protection is being installed at the lowest three levels of the garage. Perimeter waterproofing continues. Perimeter walls continue atop cast portions of parking level P1. Construction of interior walls continue. 

July 2, 2012
Work is scheduled to begin in early July on sanitary, storm water, electrical and teledata utilities in the alley between 20th and 21st Streets. Since the alley is the main access point for key university facility support functions and adjacent to the concurrent work at the Law Clinic townhouse project, work will be staged to minimize disruptions. Please note there will be closures at various points in the alley during this project as noted below:

East/20th Street end of alley work will occur primarily in July and require closures of various points throughout the work. West/21st Street end of alley will be relined in late July/early August and will require closure of this area for up to a week. Mid-block section of the alley will be closed for up to two weeks beginning in late August and through early September. Upon completion of the work in late 2012, the entire alley will be repaved. Access to the alley will be available after-hours, with the exception of the storm-ceptor installation currently scheduled to begin mid-August. That work will block off the east end of the alley 24/7 until completion at the end of August.

 

March 12, 2012
Excavation is at final sub-grade for the majority of the site. Sheeting and shoring continues in tandem site. Sheeting and shoring continues in tandem with excavation, and installation of tie-backs continues at scheduled elevations. Ramp reduction continues as part of the final excavation, sheeting & shoring, and tie-back installation. Coordination work on the Law Clinic's rear yard and Square 103 shoring work will begin Thursday March 15th, this work will require that the West end of the alley will be mostly closed off Friday March 16th and possibly Saturday March 17th. Pedestrian and vehicular impacts are expected to be minimal, updates will be provided on this page with any additional information.

February 21, 2012
Excavation is at final sub-grade for the majority of the site. Sheeting and shoring continues in tandem with excavation, and installation of tie-backs continues at scheduled elevations. The ramp is being reduced now as part of the final excavation, sheeting & shoring, and tie-back installation. Undercut of unsuitable soils and installation of structural fill is commencing at the SE corner of the site. Preparations are underway for delivery of the tower crane on Sat 24 March, which will require closure of G St for the day, and mobilization is occurring for installation of early footings beginning on Mon 12 March. Coordination work on the Clinic rear yard and 103 shoring work is anticipated to begin within (1) week; this work is anticipated to require supplemental support of the top of the 103 hole and de-stressing of the tie-backs at that location.

February 9, 2012
Excavation currently has reached final sub-grade at the northeast corner of the site. Sheeting and shoring continues in tandem with excavation, and installation of tie-backs continues at scheduled elevations. 
Currently tie-back installation has reached the fourth level across the majority of the east end of the site.

January 27, 2012
Ongoing excavation is scheduled to continue until mid-April. Excavation currently has progressed approximately 35 feet. Sheeting and shoring continues in tandem with excavation, and installation of tie-backs continues at scheduled elevations. Currently tie-back installation has reached the 3rd level.

June 14, 2012
Compacted earth back fill of footings and walls at the lowest levels of the garage is completed. Slab on grade is nearing completion at parking level 4. Waterproofing of the site walls continues. Electrical raceway installation within reinforced concrete continues in conjunction with the concrete work. Construction of suspended slabs at parking level 3 continues.

May 31, 2012
The installation of concrete footings has completed. Compacted earth back fill of footings and walls at the lowest levels of the garage continues. Waterproofing of the site walls continues. Below-slab plumbing and drainage continues. Electrical grounding work continues. Suspended slab at Level 4 east side ramp to level 3 are under construction.

May 17, 2012
Concrete footings are nearing completion and slab on grade construction is underway. Forming for the lowest level P4 suspended slab has begun. Compacted earth back fill of footings and walls at the lowest level of the garage are underway. Waterproofing of the site walls continues. Columns at the P4/P3 level have begun at the west side of the site. Below-slab plumbing and drainage continues. Electrical grounding work continues.

May 3, 2012
Concrete footings are complete on the east half of the site, and proceeding on the west half. Removal of remaining excavation soils will continue through the completion of concrete footing installation. Waterproofing of the site walls continues, with approximately 40% complete. Columns at the P4/P5 level are rising at the east end of the site. Below-slab plumbing and drainage will began the week of April 30th.

G Street is scheduled to be closed on Weds the 9th, from 9 AM to 4 PM, as required to set up a crane, for lifting/removing the heavy excavation equipment out of the hole. Please note this activity is critical path to completing the footings/foundations and our schedule.

April 17, 2012
The tower portion of the crane was installed this past weekend. Below grade concrete work is underway with footings being poured around the perimeter, and the interior footings for the columns are being installed beginning at the east end of the site. Electrical grounding to sub-grade is almost complete, and sub-grade plumbing and drainage will commence in anticipation of the lowest level slab pour, expected to occur in coming weeks.

April 10, 2012
The Law Learning Center project anticipates closing G St. NW between 20th and 21st Streets on Saturday April 14 from 7 AM to 7 PM. In addition to the vehicular travel lanes, curb lanes and sidewalks will also be closed to the public. It is possible that some activities will extend into the following day and those activities could also restrict travel on this street.

The 2000 block of G Street will be closed tomorrow (Friday/March 30) from 8:00am until approximately noon so as to facilitate installation of a crane.

December 21, 2011
Bulk site excavation continues. After GW's final exam period concludes December 21, the university will lift its prohibition on early morning exceptionally noisy activities (7-8am weekdays, 7-9am Saturdays) so all work activities may begin starting at 7am. Beginning Saturday January 15, 2012, the prohibition on construction activities will resume, allowing “exceptionally noisy” work to begin at 8am on weekdays and 9am on Saturdays rather than at 7am. To clarify, workers can begin working at 7am but it should not include activities defined as “exceptionally noisy”: surface scraping and asphalt/concrete demolition; filling of dump trucks/dumpsters with large rubble or scrap metal (soil is permitted); jack hammering; driving of piles; repeated/continuous honking/idling in vicinity of residence halls, and; loud/boisterous outdoor conversations within close proximity to residence halls. In observance of the holidays work will not occur on Monday December 26 or Monday January 2.

Drilling and pile installation is completed. Bulk site excavation will continue into the spring. During this phase of construction updates will be reduced from weekly to bi-weekly.

November 29, 2011
Sheeting and shoring steel pile installation is complete. Site excavation continues, with the excavation having reached about 24’-0” below grade at the south side.

November 21, 2011
Sheeting and shoring steel pile installation finishes adjacent Tonic, with completion prior to Thanksgiving. Site excavation continues, with the excavation having reached about 15’-0” below grade at the south side.

November 11, 2011
Sheeting & shoring steel piles have been installed on the G Street and alley side of the site. Pile installation at the east end of the site, closest to 20th street should be completed by November 12. Final pile installation begins the week of November 14th adjacent Tonic, at the west end of the site, and should be completed by the end of that week at the latest. Site excavation continues, with the benchmark having been lowered to about 6’-0” below grade.

October 21, 2011
Field construction offices have been set up on the G St side of the site. Installation of the shoring piles has begun, and is complete on the west end of the site adjacent Tonic, and is beginning on the east end of the site adjacent the future Law Clinic townhouses. Site surface demolition is complete, and site has been excavated to approximately 4'-0" down.
