Central Utility Plant (CUP): Work continues on installation of mechanical and electrical infrastructure in support of the new cogeneration plant. The areaway opening has been back-filled and the new sitework has been installed along 24th Street. This will be the last project update for 2014. Piping and wiring to the second set of new cooling towers on the roof is wrapping up. Deliveries of the large pieces of cogeneration (cogen) equipment are complete. We will begin infilling the areaway opening this month, and backfill of the areaway will follow. Demolition of the old chilled water system and mechanical mezzanine is complete and installation of a new mechanical mezzanine will be complete in July. Following this, new piping will be hung from the mezzanine and new pumps will be set. Piping and connections to the second set of new cooling towers at the roof is ongoing. Demolition of the old chilled water system and mechanical mezzanine is ongoing. Installation of a new mechanical mezzanine will begin this month and continue into next month. Following this, new piping will be hung from and new pumps will be set on the mezzanine. Delivery of the second group of new cooling towers occurred last month, and these units are being tied into the building systems. Several large pieces of equipment that are part of the CUP's new Cogeneration System are anticipated for delivery this month. Demolition of the old chilled water system and a mechanical mezzanine will begin this month and continue into next month. Preparations for the second group of new cooling towers are ongoing and the delivery is scheduled for the end of this month. The delivery of several large pieces of equipment that are part of the new Cogen system located in the CUP are anticipated for delivery next month. Central Utility Plant (CUP): Work continues on installation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) infrastructure inside the plant. Chilled water system is anticipated to begin in April. Dismantling of the old cooling towers is ongoing and will complete this month. The installation of the new cooling tower support steel and piping has begun for the new cooling towers. Closure of the two eastern lanes of 23 Street between H and Eye Streets is scheduled for March 15/16 to accommodate crane that will be used to install rooftop air-handler units on Ross Hall. This work is weather dependent. The next update will be on April 1, 2014 unless otherwise needed for additional activities that may impact the campus.February 5, 2013
Central Utility Plant (CUP): Work continues on installation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) infrastructure, including MEP piping work on the Ross Hall roof. The new chillers are scheduled to be rigged into the CUP through the area way on 24th Street on Saturday 2/15. The new cooling towers on the roof are operational and demolition of the old cooling towers and support structure will begin in the month of February. Demolition activities will involve mechanical piping in the plant over the next five days. A crane will be set up within our 24th Street staging area February 10-14, this will not impact any travel lanes on 24th Street. The next update will be on March 3, 2014 unless otherwise needed for additional activities that may impact the campus.The road closure scheduled for February 10-14 was rescheduled to February 22-23 as a result of inclement weather.

Research Center for Neglected Diseases of Poverty: work completed ahead of schedule and users have begun to transition into the new space on floors 5 and 6 of Ross Hall. The 800 block of 23rd Street will be partially closed for a crane to install equipment related to the renovations at Ross Hall. Also, work at the Science and Engineering Hall in the 23rd Street vicinity will begin at 5:00 a.m. to facilitate concrete operations on the strong wall.September 3, 2013

Air handling units on the 3rd floor are operational and have been supplying conditioned air to the entire wing. Interior finish work on the 5th and 6th floor are underway with installation of research equipment, casework, paint, doors and flooring are underway. Finishes are being applied on the interior of the stair tower. Additional project work at Ross Hall: Work to replace the storage tanks beneath the building’s loading dock ramp (near 24th & H Streets) is substantially complete. Loading dock equipment and perimeter fencing will be removed this week.

Additional project work at Ross Hall:Work to replace the storage tanks beneath the building’s loading dock ramp (near 24th & H Streets) is nearing completion. To facilitate GW’s annual fall move-in on August 24, the perimeter project fence in the 2300 block of H Street across from Amsterdam Hall will be temporarily moved to the curb so as to allow for additional space in that area of the street.2013, August 12, August 15 and 16: to facilitate temporary site crane this weekend, work will occur between morning and evening rush hours on H Street on August 15-16. Traffic will continue to have access during this time. There will be a four lane closure on 23rd Street between H and Eye Streets to facilitate on site crane on August 17-18. Travel lanes on the east side of 23rd Street will be open on these days.

Upcoming Work on the Central Utility Plant work includes: Installation of sprinkler lines piping continues in existing switchgear room and installation of scissor lift pit will continue through next week; Mechanical riser work at the loading dock will begin in coming weeks;
B1/Areaway: Continued work on relocation of B1 corridor and existing utilities.
Loading dock: Crane operations for Mechanical riser piping occurred June 20th-22nd.
Roof: Delivery of roof equipment June 13-14 required a closure of the 2300 block of H Street and the sidewalk on the north side of the street; Roof top exhaust fans relocations are scheduled for the first several weeks of June.
Garage: Duct bank installation will be complete by the end of this week; east/west excavation is finished and now is underway at vault area; installation of chilled water pipes continues.
3rd Floor electrical room: Metal panel is being installed.
The following work continues on the creation of a new Research Center for Neglected Diseases of Poverty:
Basement: installation of new and upgrading of existing fuel lines continues as does installation of generator control and duct feeders.
Floor 3: continued work on air handler units, cleaning of steam piping, and installation of new dampers.
Floor 5: continued installation of sheet flooring and fixed casework, pantry cabinets, wood windows, and the wet labs’ counter tops.
Floor 6: continued elevator lobby overhead work, installing ceiling tile boarders, priming/painting of walls/ceilings, installing HVAC hot water piping.
Floor 7: finish closing exterior shaft walls and paint, install stainless tell ductwork, rebuild ceilings and install air flow monitors.
Roof area: assembly of main ducks and installation of switchboard.
Plaza work/exterior stair tower: installation of metal panels, continued intumescent painting of stairs, and installation of sprinkler riser. Stairs are expected to be completed by early summer.
Beginning the week of June 24: the 24th Street loading dock entrance ramp will be closed until mid August to facilitate continued work on the Ross Hall Renovations including replacement of two below-grade storage tanks. Initial work will include removal of the concrete ramp which may produce periods of above average noise for several days next week as the first tank is removed and also for several days in late July when the second tank is removed.
Although work will occur throughout the standard permitted construction hours of 7am-7pm Monday through Saturday, project officials anticipate work creating above average noise to begin later in the morning, approximately 9:00 a.m. Deliveries will be relocated to a new hoist on H Street and project officials will coordinate traffic flows per a traffic control plan to be approved by the DC Government, including delivery logistics.June 5, 2013
B1/Areaway: installation of upper areaway structural steel is completed - concrete and masonry work is now underway in this area; Loading dock: Erection of corridor steel continues; Roof: Parapet openings have been demolished and equipment pads have been placed for the relocation of the fans. Garage: The new Surge Tank has been set in the garage and the masonry is complete at the switchgear room; Painting and installation of door/hardware and exhaust fans/dampers to occur over next two weeks; garage trenching has begun -- all concrete is removed along the trench and vault locations and excavation is now underway for the pipe runs. 3rd Floor electrical room: Replacement clips are installed and the chain fall has been removed.

The following work continues on the Central Utility Plant portion of this project includes the following: Structural work in the B1/Areaway is ongoing and plumbing rework in the B03, B04 and B05 rooms is wrapping up; Preparation work at the loading dock for construction of the vertical riser to facilitate new utility infrastructure associated with this project; In the lower level garage, remaining switchgear room pads will be placed this week and mobilization will begin next week in the southwest corner to prepare for masonry work; Work will begin in the next few weeks on the roof with regards to penetrations for the new steel work, and; Relocation in late January of two bike racks and a trash can currently near building entrance to allow for equipment installation. Clark is moving forward with the redesign work in the lower level suites and is aiming for a later February completion of the space.PEPCO continues work for the new incoming power service to Ross Hall for an anticipated completion in March 2013, pending weather and site conditions. PEPCO has completed placing the vault on 24th Street and duct bank installation continues along H Street moving east. A second crew continues to work on 23rd and H Streets moving south, including installation in the second week of January of a precast vault at 23rd and H Streets. Additional vehicular lane closures are not expected in the H Street portion of this work but there may be temporary closure of the western most vehicular lane of 23rd Street during that phase of work.
The following work continues on the creation of a new Research Center for Neglected Diseases of Poverty: Loading dock area work includes continued site preparation for installation of anchored plates and installing swing stage for scanning and layout of anchor plates for the vertical riser; Roof area work includes continued installation of new roof membrane; Floor 5 work includes continued installation of piping systems and wall rough-ins and hanging perimeter walls above windows. Floor 6 work includes installing duct risers along perimeter and interior shafts, building out electrical panels, and hanging perimeter walls above windows. Floor 3 work includes continued installation of chilled water supply for air handler units. Basement work includes recent pouring of concrete pads on electrical mezzanine as well as work on ventilation supply fans and rough-ins for temporary generator. Work continues on exterior stair tower with continued construction through early 2013, followed by enclosure, stair construction, and finishing work with a completion date anticipated in spring 2013. Initial demolition activities related to this project are now complete and work is underway to install stair stringers and landings.

Related to construction of the vertical riser to facilitate new utility infrastructure associated with this project, the 2300 block of H Street and the loading dock will be closed Saturday, February 23rd during erection of structure for new steel riser which will be followed by installation of mechanical electrical and plumbing systems. Additional cooling tower steel delivery is anticipated for the weekend of 3-16-13 (weather and schedule pending) and will involve a two lane closure on 23rd street (south of the Ross Hall parking garage entrance). Delivery of new transformers and switchgear is anticipated in the first two Saturdays of March. Delivery of equipment anticipated for March 23 will require a temporary closure of 24th Street. PEPCO continues work for the new incoming power service to Ross Hall for an anticipated completion in March 2013 (pending weather and site conditions)—vaults related to this have been completed and remaining work includes duct bank installation on 23rd Street between F and H Streets. PEPCO has completed the installation of duct bank across the Ross Hall loading dock and the trench has been backfilled/paved; installation of the concrete apron of the ramp is pending. In the lower level garage: construction is completed on a lower level temporary locker room for project engineers and demolition of old locker room is now underway; work continues on PEPCO switchgear room, and; layout will begin in coming weeks on structural steel work for the new piping in the central utility plant. Test removal of the concrete spandrel panel at the third floor electrical room above the main lobby is anticipated to occur Saturday, March 2 and work on that floor’s rigging operation will occur March 16. Relocation of two fans on the rooftop portion of this project was completed and work on the roof membrane work will continue for several weeks, including drilling of anchors for new cooling tower.

Work scheduled during the week of March 11 (GW spring break) will include work that will create additional interior noises and require some shutdowns of building systems (in coordination with building occupants).The project team is coordinating with Medical School officials to coordinate work around upcoming exam periods in April and early May.
Digging of two test pits and other initial work in Ross Hall Garage will begin next week to prepare for this summer's temporary closure of the garage as the connection is made under 23rd Street between Ross Hall and the under-construction Science and Engineering Hall.
Upcoming road closures associated with this project include: Delivery of switchgear anticipated for both March 30 and April 14 will require closure of 24th Street on each day; Arrival of new transformers and removal of existing units in Floor 3 mechanical space will require a closure of 24th Street on April 6, and; Deliveries on either April 20 or 27 will require a temporary closure of 24th Street.
PEPCO continues work for the new incoming power service to Ross Hall for an anticipated completion in March 2013 (pending weather and site conditions) - final tie-in to the building will be underway in coming weeks.
Other work includes: B/1 areaway - waterproofing and masonry installation continues over the next two weeks; Loading dock - steel installation begins week of March 25; Roof - cooling tower shed has been installed and steel detailing will occur over next month.

Related to construction of the vertical riser to facilitate new utility infrastructure associated with this project, the 2300 block of H Street and the anticipated 02-23-13 loading dock closure has been postponed. Additional cooling tower steel delivery is anticipated for the weekend of 3-16-13 (weather and schedule pending) and will involve a two lane closure on 23rd street (south of the Ross Hall parking garage entrance). Delivery of switchgear is anticipated for both March 30 and April 13 and will require closure of 24th Street on each day. Delivery of equipment anticipated for March 23 will require a temporary closure of 24th Street. PEPCO continues work for the new incoming power service to Ross Hall for an anticipated completion in March 2013 (pending weather and site conditions) - duct bank work at 23rd & H Streets and 23rd & F Streets is nearing completion and final tie-in to the building will be underway in coming weeks. In the lower level garage: in the central utility plant area, the locker room demolition is complete and work on overhead conduit work is underway; in the B/1 area, the first half of the areaway cavity wall installation is complete. Test removal of the concrete spandrel panel at the third floor electrical room above the main lobby is anticipated to occur Saturday, March 23 and work on that floor’s rigging operation will occur April 6. Work on installation of roofing is nearing completion and cooling tower posts are scheduled for delivery in early March to be hoisted to the roof.

Work associated with Ross Hall renovations will require a closure of 24th Street (between H and Eye Streets) on April 27 and May 3 for equipment delivery. Work on May 3 will occur later in the day so as to not conflict with preferred work hours for final exams.April 16, 2013
Please note that in addition to the major renovation projects listed below, there are several additional minor projects are also taking place within Ross Hall. Of note is work on fourth floor lab which has required interior demolition of existing walls which are then removed from the premises via the trash chute, causing periods of above average noise. It is expected that this work will conclude within a week.The following work continues on the Central Utility Plant portion of this project: The project team continues coordinating with Medical School officials to work around upcoming exam periods in April and early May. Upcoming road closures associated with this project include: deliveries on April 27 will require a temporary closure of 24th Street. PEPCO continues work for the new incoming power service to Ross Hall for an anticipated completion in mid-to-late May 2013 (pending weather and site conditions). Other work includes: B/1 areaway steel to be erected over the next two weeks; Loading dock - steel installation and scaffolding erection continues; Roof - cooling tower steel has been installed and steel detailing to continue another two weeks.
The following work continues on the creation of a new Research Center for Neglected Diseases of Poverty: Basement work includes installation of electrical switchgear, emergency generators and walls, automatic transfer switches, installation of the fire pump and fuel oil system to support new generators; Floor 3 work includes continued installation of HVAC piping to air handler units; Floor 5 work includes taping and finishing drywall, with painting operation starting the week of 4/29; installation of steam piping on shafts of perimeter walls; Floor 6 work includes installing duct risers along perimeter and interior shafts, building out electrical panels, and hanging drywall on interior & exterior walls; Floor 7 work includes installation of heat recovery piping, vent piping in shaft walls and insulation of exhaust duct work; Roof area work includes installation of new roof layers on middle section, installation of duct stands and electrical bus ducts; columns for steel mechanical platform with conduit and pads for switchboards, and; Plaza Work area continues on exterior stair tower -- installation of window framing sealants and gaskets on east elevation. Both streets will be closed beginning Saturday morning. Work on 24th Street is expected to finish by Saturday evening and work in the 2300 block of H Street will continue through Sunday evening. Beginning the week of May 20 and lasting through late August, work will be underway on the Ross Hall Garage utility enhancements to make the connection of utilities under 23rd Street between Ross Hall and the now-under-construction Science and Engineering Hall. Demolition of concrete in the lower levels of the parking garage is required for this scope of work and will include an increase in workers and delivery trucks along 23rd Street between H Street and the Eye Street Metro entrance. Mobilization of equipment, interior saw cutting and demolition inside the garage is schedule to begin the week of May 20. The sidewalk is anticipated to remain open during this process and there will be flaggers on site to facilitate traffic/pedestrian flow as needed. Several of the meters between H Street and the parking garage entrance will be closed during this time for construction staging and and will be reopened for evening rush hour only. At this time, it is not anticipated that the bus stop in this area will be impacted however this will be monitored as the work progresses.

Floor 5: connection of chilled beams, application of prime coat of painting on ceilings and walls, installation of sheet flooring and fixed casework installation in wet labs. Floor 6: flushing chilled beam piping, overhead work on elevator lobby, pouring floor underlayment, installing ceiling tile boarders, and priming/painting of walls/ceilings. Floor 7: closing exterior shaft walls, insulation of heat recovery piping, connecting exhaust ductwork and rebuilding ceilings. Roof area: assembly of heat recovery units, installation of main ducks, and controls rough in. To accommodate final exams period for students, these conditions will apply to the construction work December 12-21, 2012: Work is permitted Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.; After hours permits may not be used during this period; Work on Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16 is prohibited; Exceptionally noisy work may (see definition at end of this update) not begin before 9:00 am and should be avoided altogether if possible, and; New closings of sidewalks or parking lanes are prohibited. From Saturday, December 22 through Saturday, January 12, 2013, the exceptionally noisy work restrictions are lifted and work may occur 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. On Sunday, January 13, regular work hours will resume.PEPCO has begun work for the new incoming power service to Ross Hall and continue for an anticipated completion of March 2013, pending weather and site conditions. Work began at the intersection of 24th & H Streets and is proceeding this week along H Street to 23rd Street and then proceed south on the western side of 23rd Street to either F or G Street. An additional crew will being work next week to construct the new vault associated with this work. Interior demolition is complete on floors 5 and 6 at the Research Centers for Neglected Diseases of Poverty portion of this project and wall layout, piping, and duct hanger installation is now underway on floor 5 and abatement is underway on floor 6. New water lines on 24th Street are complete. Demolition work on the Eye Street Plaza is complete for the exterior stairwell associated with this project as is initial layout. Removal of windows and exterior elements will begin early October. Installation of steel for the new stair tower will begin in late October.Work in coming weeks on the Central Utility Plant portion of this project includes completing excavation on the access shaft near the corner of H & 24th Streets (adjacent to Ross Hall’s entry ramp to the loading dock) and removing the existing foundation wall which is anticipated to be finished slightly ahead of schedule by early to mid-October. Since this work will create increased periods of noise, it will primarily occur outside of peak classroom use periods (early mornings and weekends) and within DC permitted hours for construction. Work continues on installation of the hoist used to convey materials/staff to work on upper floors and roof. Demolition/site preparation on the eastern portion of Ross Hall will soon be underway to prepare for new rooftop mechanical units associated with this project.

Exterior work is scheduled to begin in late September adjacent Ross Hall on the Eye Street Plaza to construct the exterior stairwell associated with this project.Work in early September on the Central Utility Plant portion of this project, initial excavation work is underway on the access shaft near the corner of H & 24th Streets (adjacent to Ross Hall’s entry ramp to the loading dock) and is anticipated for completion in mid to late September. Following excavation will be the removal of the existing foundation wall which is anticipated to last approximately four weeks and will create periods of increased noise. Work continues on installation of the hoist used to convey materials/staff to work on upper floors and roof.
