Renovation of Thurston Hall

Renovation Project Overview
Thurston Hall, a first year residence hall will undergo a complete transformation that will provide a reimagined place for students to live, learn, and socialize.

A new three-season atrium, student lounges and community spaces with natural light feature prominently in the proposal for the complete interior renovation of Thurston Hall. The project plan was approved by GW’s Board of Trustees in May of 2019.
During summer/fall 2019, the university continued the design process, engaged in discussions with the community regarding plans for housing students during construction and filed its proposal with District of Columbia regulatory agencies, including the Zoning Commission. Due to COVID-19 vacating students from GW, this project began early in May 2020.

The renovated hall would house approximately 825 students in doubles and singles as well as faculty-in-residence and residential life staff. Under the current plans, students would move into a new Thurston no later than fall 2022, and potentially as early as 2021.

GW will engage with, and update the university and Foggy Bottom communities as the project progresses.

More details and filings will be shared in the coming months as logistics and plans are finalized.
