Thurston Hall Construction Updates
August 3, 2021
Major demolition and structural modifications, such as the installation of a new footbridge, creation of two-story lounges, and new penthouse framing, are complete. Interior construction is progressing, with partition framing and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installation underway. Window replacement is nearing completion and installation of the nine-story glass curtain wall in the courtyard will begin over the next month.

Major non-structural demolition is complete on all levels. Asbestos abatement is substantially complete as well. Structural demolition, including removal of existing slabs, is complete at the NE, NW, and SE quadrants of the interior with the remaining SW quadrant to be completed by end-September. Structural modifications are underway, including the placement of new shear wall footings at the Northeast, Northwest, and Southeast quadrants. Temporary steel trusses are currently being installed to support the existing structure while the new elevator pits are constructed.

Removal of existing landscaping and berm in the public space adjacent to Thurston Hall is complete. During construction, this area will be used as a temporary staging area, including temporary office trailers. Once the project is complete, the landscaping will be repaired. Major demolition is complete on all levels. Asbestos abatement is substantially complete as well. Structural modifications, including temporary shoring, foundations, and existing slab removal, remain underway.

Removal of existing landscaping and berm in the public space adjacent to Thurston Hall is complete. During construction, this area will be used as a temporary staging area, including temporary office trailers. Once the project is complete, the landscaping will be repaired. Major demolition is complete on Levels 9, 8, 7, 1, and Basement. Demolition is underway on Levels 6 through 2. Asbestos abatement is substantially complete. During the demolition phase, community members might notice an increase in trucks driving north up 20th Street, turning east onto F Street, and then south down 19th Street. It is anticipated that any noise impacts associated with the increased truck traffic will occur in the vicinity of 19th & F Streets. The hours for demolition are 7am - 5pm.

Necessary HVAC work at Mitchell Hall is complete and temporary HVAC is operating at the property. Removal of existing landscaping and berm in the public space adjacent to Thurston Hall will be complete by the end of the month. During construction, this area will be used as a temporary staging area. Once the project is complete, the landscaping will be repaired. Major demolition is complete on Level 1. Demolition is underway on Levels 9, 8, 7, and Basement. Asbestos abatement is underway on Levels 6, 5, and 4. During the demolition phase, community members might notice an increase in trucks driving north up 20th Street, turning east onto F Street, and then south down 19th Street. As initial steps in the upcoming renovation of Thurston Hall, Clark Construction will begin to close some sidewalks and vehicular lanes around the building. This begins with the closure of the sidewalk and parking lane in front of Thurston Hall on F Street between 19th and 20th Streets. The sidewalk on 19th Street between F and E Streets will remain open. The parking lane along 19th Street will still be available, excluding the hours of 7:00 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. during construction activities, for the duration of the project. Parking enforcement will be ticketing these parking spaces during construction hours. In addition, there is an accessible street crossing on F Street between 19th and 20th streets to allow pedestrians to cross the street to get around the construction site.

A crane will be used for equipment delivery at Mitchell Hall. This will take place with a full lane closure on 19th Street between F and E Streets. The sidewalk will be closed during this work as well. The street closure for crane use will be from 7am - 3pm with the actual work anticipated for 9am until early afternoon. Flag staff will be on-site to assist with any vehicular or pedestrian detours that are needed.
