Square 39/July 3, 2014: Move-in of faculty and staff members' furniture and materials was completed in May 2014.  Summer classes are currently being held throughout the building as we prepare for the fall semester.   Punch list work continued throughout the building during June, before 9am and after 6pm, in order to minimize disruption of the summer classes.  With few punch list items remaining, this project is considered complete. There will be no further construction updates. 

Square 39/June 5, 2014: Punch list work is in progress and will continue through the summer. After hours work is permitted to allow for this work to continue with minimal disruption to classes and staff members working in the building during the day. Most landscaping has been completed. The next update will be July 1. 

Square 39/May 19, 2014: Beginning Monday, May 19 and lasting for approximately eight workdays (including Saturday), the 900 block of 24th Street will be closed to complete utility connections to the Milken School of Public Health project and make related road/sidewalk repairs. The work will be occurring toward the southern end of this block of 24th Street - near Eye Street.  Access to driveways and the City Hall parking garage will be maintained during the street closure. 

The work is not anticipated to be exceptionally noisy.  Activities will include excavation of asphalt and concrete to enable access to the water connections, connecting the water lines, backfilling the holes, and repaving the road. Work is scheduled to take place outside of rush hour, between 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. 

The utility connection is anticipated for completion Thursday, May 22.  DC Water is expected to communicate to any residents in this block on Tuesday, May 20 as to details about water outages.

Square 39/April 29, 2014: Furniture installation is complete. The building exterior, site work, and landscaping is scheduled for completion in May. Utility work for 24th Street has been postponed until after Commencement Weekend (May 17-19).  Project continues to be on schedule for final completion so classes to begin being held in this building during the upcoming summer sessions.

Square 39/April 7, 2014: Beginning Monday 4/14 through 4/26, furniture  trucks will be using the existing lane closure on 24th Street to begin to move furniture into the building. This process is anticipated to start at 7 a.m. and last until approximately 5 p.m. each night.  During these times there will likely be multiple trucks on site but they are anticipated to remain within the dedicated lane already temporarily closed for work associated with this site.  The building exterior and the site work and landscaping is scheduled for completion in May. Square 39/March 7, 2014: Beginning Friday, March 7 and continuing March 10-14, moving trucks will be using the existing lane closure on 24th Street to begin to move staff into the building. This process is anticipated to start at 6pm and last until approximately 11pm each night. Square 39/February 26, 2014:  Final inspections are taking place this week. Once complete, the office portion of the building will begin to be occupied. Office furniture is being moved in this week. Audio visual and data cabling/equipment installation is in progress.  Work continues on punch-list items.  Road work on 24th Street is still on hold while until  DDOT reopens New Hampshire Avenue between I Street and Washington Circle. Weather permitting, plantings around the site and in the park will take place in mid-March through early April. 

Square 39/February 4, 2014: Interior work that is currently in progress includes painting, ceiling work, interior woodwork, interior doors, hardware, acoustic wall panels, atrium stair treads, glass rails, carpet tile installation and placement of office cubicles. On the exterior, installation of curb/gutter and  sidewalk base and pavers is underway as is exterior stone work and roofing.  

Square 39/January 17, 2014: Work in progress includes painting, ceiling work, interior woodwork,  interior doors, hardware, electrical trim,  acoustic wall panels, atrium stair treads, glass rails, carpet/ceramic tile installation, curb/gutter repairs, placement of sidewalk base and pavers, exterior stone work, site wall work, and roofing.  

Square 39/January 3, 2014: Work in progress includes painting, ceiling work, interior woodwork,  interior doors, hardware, electrical trim,  acoustic wall panels, atrium stair treads, glass rails, carpet/ceramic tile installation, curb/gutter repairs, placement of sidewalk base and pavers, exterior stone work, site wall work, and roofing.  

Waterline replacements to the 24th Street townhouses have been completed. Final work will begin connecting 12-inch water line. Timing of this work is determined by DC Water. Updates will be provided as soon as possible.
 

Square 39/December 05, 2013: Painting, ceiling work, interior woodwork,  interior doors, hardware, electrical trim, exterior stone work, acoustic wall panels, atrium stair treads, glass rails, curb and gutter work, site wall work, roofing, and ceramic tile installation are in progress.  Waterline replacements to the 24th Street townhouses have been delayed while waiting for the meters and crocks. These are expected to arrive on Monday (12/9).   Back filling of the open trenches and removing the steel plates occurred on December 5. When work restarts, we will minimize the use of plates as much as possible while completing the work. 

Square 39/November 20, 2013: Terrazzo flooring is complete on floor B1. Painting, ceiling work, interior woodwork, and electrical trim are in progress throughout the building. Installation of exterior wall panels is complete and exterior stone work is now in progress. Atrium stair treads and glass rails are in progress. Curb and gutter work, site wall work, roofing, and ceramic tile installation are in progress. Concrete polishing is in progress on the 1st floor auditorium. Work will not take place at the site from November 28 through December 1. 

Square 39/November 4, 2013: Painting, ceiling work, interior woodwork, and electrical trim are in progress. Terrazzo flooring is complete on floor B1. Installation of exterior wall panels is complete and exterior stone work is now in progress.   Atrium stair treads are in progress. Curb and gutter work will start next week on the west side. Roofing is in progress on the penthouse.

Square 39/ October 31, 2013: Beginning in early November, DC Water will be working on the 900 block of 24th Street near the Milken Institute SPH Services construction site. This work will take approximately 2 weeks to complete. Temporary lane and sidewalk closures will be necessary to complete this work. Once details are finalized they will be posted on the Lane Closures page.  DC Water will notify any community members if and when service disruptions may occur. 

Square 39/October 30, 2013: Whiting Turner has received permits to allow work at the Milken Institute SPH building site to extend beyond the standard 7:00 p.m. end-time.  This extension is limited to interior work and is not anticipated to create noise or traffic impacts. Protocols are in place to ensure workers exit building quietly and deliveries do not occur beyond 7:00 p.m. Extended hours are expected to commence as early as October 31, 2013 and continue into early 2014.

Square 39/October 24, 2013: Painting, ceiling work, interior woodwork, and electrical trim are in progress. Terrazzo is complete on floor B1. Installation of exterior wall panels is complete and exterior stone work is now in progress. Installation of the storm line is complete.  Atrium stairs stringers (steel that supports the stairs) are installed and now installation of the stair treads is in progress. Curb and gutter has been installed on the north side of the site and will start next week on the west side.

Square 39/October 23, 2013: Whiting Turner is currently pursuing an after-hours work permit to allow work at the School of Public Health and Health Services building site to extend beyond the standard 7:00 p.m. end-time.  This extension is limited to interior work and is not anticipated to create noise or traffic impacts. Protocols are in place to ensure workers exit building quietly and deliveries do not occur beyond 7:00 p.m. Extended hours are expected to commence as early as October 31, 2013 and continue into early 2014.

Square 39/October 3, 2013: Drywall in in progress on floors L6 and L7. Painting and ceilings are in progress. Terrazzo is in progress on floor B1. We have temporary use of the elevator. Installation of exterior wall panels on the south elevation is progressing. The material hoist will be removed next week which will allow for the completion of the building skin.  Exterior stone work is in progress. Installation of the storm line is complete. Curb and gutter work will begin next week. Atrium stairs stringers (steel that supports the stairs) are installed. The construction offices have been relocated to the B2 level of the building, and the trailers will be removed next week.

Square 39/September 20, 2013: Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit in the walls and ceilings is progressing. Elevator work is progressing with temporary usage expected by the end of the month. Installation of exterior wall panels on the southeast elevation is complete. The north stair panels are also complete. The south stair panels are in progress. Exterior stone work is in progress. Installation of the storm line is complete. Curb and gutter work will begin mid-block on 24th Street running north next week. Atrium stairs stringers (steel that supports the stairs) are in progress.

Square 39/September 3, 2013: Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit in the walls and ceilings is progressing on floors L6 and L7.  Elevator work is progressing with temporary expected by month's end. Installation of exterior wall panels on the southeast elevation is nearing completion. Exterior stone work is in progress.  Installation of the storm line is expected to be completed mid month and will require shut down of 24th Street between rush hours for 5-8 days.

Square 39/August 19, 2013: Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit in the walls and ceilings is progressing on floors B2 through L7.  Elevator work is progressing and we expect to have temporary use of an elevator this month. Installation of exterior wall panels on the northeast elevation is complete and work on the southeast elevation is in progress. The final water main connects are complete.  Installation of the sewer line is complete. Installation of the storm line will be done in early September and will require shut down of 24th Street between rush hours for 7-10 days.

Square 39/August 2, 2013: Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit in the walls and ceilings is progressing on floors B2 through L7.  Elevator work is progressing with door frames set. Opaque guard rail framing is in progress. Installation of exterior wall panels on the northeast elevation is in progress and will be followed by work on the southeast elevation. Installation of the new water main is in progress and is anticipated to be completed in late August. Installation of the storm and sewer lines will start next week and are anticipated to be completed in late August.

Square 39/July 11, 2013: Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit in the walls and ceilings is progressing on floors B2 through L7. Framing is in progress on floors L5 through L7. Elevators are progressing. Skylight is nearing completion. Installation of exterior wall panels on the northeast elevation will start next week. Installation of the new water main will start mid July.

Road Closure Update/June 18-19: PEPCO will be working near the new School of Public Health and Health Services construction site beginning late evening and working into early morning to establish permanent connections to the new building.  It is not anticipated this work will create above average noise and most of the work is anticipated to occur below grade.

Square 39/June 3, 2013: Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit in the walls and ceilings is progressing on floors B2 through L7. Framing is in progress on floors B1 through L4. Elevator columns and beams are complete. Skylight support steel is in progress. Installation of exterior wall panels on the north elevation will start this week. PEPCO has installed the primary cables and transformers. Permanent power is anticipated in mid June. 

Square 39/ May 23, 2013: After hours work scheduled so as to allow for installation of utility equipment at the new School of Public Health and Health Services project (adjacent the GW Hospital and Washington Circle), work will occur, tonight,  Thursday, May 23, 2013 outside of the standard 7am-7pm work hours.  Work is anticipated to begin at 10:00 p.m. and last for approximately four hours.  This permitted work is not anticipated to create additional noise impacts but will include additional workers on site outside standard working hours.

Square 39/May 15, 2013:  Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit  in the walls and ceilings is progressing on floors B2 through L7. Masonry walls are in progress on floors L5 through L7. Elevator columns and beams are being installed. Framing is in progress on floors B1 through L1. Installation of exterior wall panels on the west elevation will complete this week. PEPCO installation of the primary service will start mid May.

Installation of piping, duct work, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings is progressing on floors B2 through L4. Masonry walls are in progress on floors L1 and L4. Elevator columns and beams are being installed.  Framing of the electrical rooms are in progress. Installation of exterior wall panels on the west elevation is in progress.

Square 39/April 15, 2013:  The first half of the roof elevated slab has been poured. This marks the “topping out” of the construction site when the construction of the structure reaches its highest point.  Faculty, administrators, construction staff, and CampaignGW representatives gathered on April 10 to recognize this construction milestone.

Piping, duct work, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings are in progress on floors B2, B1, and L1. Masonry walls are in progress on floors B1 and B2. The equipment platform on floor B2 is complete. Elevator columns and beams are being installed.  Framing of the electrical rooms is in progress. Installation of exterior wall panels on the west elevation is in progress.

Square 39/April 9, 2013: Installation of the Level 7 floor slab is complete. Framing for the roof elevated slab is complete. The installation of  in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves continues. The roof slab will be poured on the tenth of April. The installation of the PEPCO duct banks and vaults are complete. Piping, ductwork, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings are in progress on B2 Level. Masonry walls are in progress on B1 and B2 Levels. The equipment platform on B2 is in progress. Framing of the electrical rooms is in progress on Floors 1 and 2. Exterior wall panels will start next week.

Square 39/March 25, 2013: Installation of the Level 6 floor slab is complete. Framing for the 7th elevated slab continues as does installation of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves.  The installation of the PEPCO duct banks are in progress. Vaults have been set. Piping and ductwork as well as conduit installation in the walls and ceilings are in progress on B2 level. Masonry walls are in progress on B1 level.

Square 39/March 1, 2013:Installation of the Level 4 and 5 columns and elevated slabs continues as does installation of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves. Level 4 elevated slab was completed this week. Level 5 form work is in progress. The installation of the PEPCO duct banks are in progress.  Piping, B2 ductwork, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings are in Progress. B2 level masonry walls are in progress.

Square 39/February 21, 2013: Current work includes:  installation of the Level 3 & 4 columns and elevated slabs. Installation continues of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves. Level 3 elevated slab will be completed this week. Level 4 form work is in progress. The installation of the PEPCO Vaults will start next week.  Piping, ductwork, and conduit installation in the walls and ceilings will begin on B2 starting next week.

Square 39/January 31, 2013: Current work includes:  installation of the Level B1, 1, and 2 columns and elevated slabs. Installation continues of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves. Level B1 elevated slab will be completed this week. Level 2 concrete slab installation will start next week.

Square 39/January 7, 2013: Current work includes:  installation of the Level B1 elevated slab; construction of interior columns on Levels B1 to 1, and; installation of in-slab conduit and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sleeves. Installation of concrete footings, slab on-grade, and construction of columns on Levels B1 and B2 are complete.

Square 39/December 19, 2012: Recognizing the importance of the upcoming December 12-21 Final Exams period, the university is extending the prohibition on construction activities likely to be exceptionally noisy to 9:00am on weekdays at the sites for all of GW’s major  construction projects, including the Science and Engineering Hall site. Workers can work from 7–9:00am during this time, but the work may not include activities that are defined in this letter to students (.pdf) dating December 10, 2012 – regular work may commence after 9:00 a.m.  Also, work will not occur at these sites on Saturday December 15, 2012.

Concrete footings will be complete this week. Foundation walls, and waterproofing are in progress. Foundation drainage installation and electrical work under-slab are in progress. The slab on grade is 70% complete. Framing and prep-work for the first section of elevated slab is in progress and will be poured this week.

Unless otherwise needed, the next project update for this site will be posted the first week of January 2013.

Square 39/December 1, 2012: Concrete footings, foundation walls, and waterproofing are in progress. Foundation drainage installation and electrical workunder-slab have begun.  In early December the lower level slab will begin to be poured.

Square 39/November 15, 2012:  Concrete footings, foundation walls, and waterproofing are in progress. The lower level underslab plumbing is complete. Construction will not occur on Thursday, November 22nd for Thanksgiving. 

Square 39/November 1, 2012:  Excavation is complete. Concrete footings, waterproofing, and under slab plumbing are in progress. The tower crane was installed in late October.

Square 39/October 15, 2012:  Controlled blasting activities have completed.  Excavation will continue through October.  Concrete footings are in progress. The tower crane was installed on Saturday, October 13th. Waterproofing operations will begin this week. Initial plumbing work will begin next week.

Square 39/October 1, 2012:  Controlled blasting activities began September 19, 2012 and will continue into early October.  During this time, excavation continues as rock is removed from the blasting areas. Concrete work will begin in early October. The tower crane will likely be installed in mid-October, pending final permits.

Square 39/September 15, 2012: As part of the excavation required for construction of the new building for GW’s School of Public Health and Health Services, twice-daily controlled blasting activities are planned for weekdays beginning as soon as Sept. 17 and will continue for approximately three weeks. The extent and duration of the blasting will depend on the amount of rock at the site – located between K and 24th streets, Washington Circle and New Hampshire Avenue— as well as other site and field conditions. Square 39/September 4, 2012:  Tieback installation is expected to complete the week of September 10th. Excavation, fill export, and lagging installation is expected to continue through September. Fractured rock is currently being removed with mechanical equipment. Excavation has reached an elevation of 35 feet and will continue until an elevation of 21 feet. 

Square 39/August 15, 2012: Excavation, fill export, and lagging/tie-back installation is expected to continue through August.

Square 39/August 1, 2012: The removal of the existing foundation is complete. Excavation, fill export, and lagging/tie-back installation are in progress. This phase of construction will continue through August.  

Square 39/July 16, 2012: The installation of piles is complete and the drill rig has been removed from the site. The removal of the existing foundation is in progress. Excavation, fill export, and lagging are in progress and will continue through August. Tie-back installation will start the week of July 23rd. 

Square 39/July 02, 2012: Work will not occur on Wednesday July 4 in observance of Independence Day.  The razing of the building is complete. Excavation will start the 9th of July. This work will continue through August.

Square 39/June 12, 2012: The razing of the building is complete. We will start drilling piles on 6/14. This work will continue through the first week in August.

Square 39/May 31, 2012:  Raze of building began on May 15th and is expected to continue through June 4. The drilling of the piles is anticipated to begin week of June 3.

Square 39/May 14, 2012: Interior demo and abatement is completed the week of May 6th. Utility service has been disconnected. Raze permit has been received. Raze of building began on May 15th and is expected to continue over the next three of weeks.

Square 39/April 27, 2012: Interior asbestos abatement and exterior limestone removal began in late March and will continue until completion anticipated which is expected to occur next week. Exterior limestone has been removed for possible future reuse in the new School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) building. Some trees have been removed as part of site preparations. Interior demolition continues in advance of the raze of the building.Body
