CHARLES E. SMITH CENTER RENOVATION:
OVERVIEW & WEEKLY UPDATES
Overview: This renovation project is scheduled to occur in three phases:
- Phase I from January-April 2009 focused on minor structural infill and preparation for Phase II construction;
- Phase II from April-October 2009 is a life safety systems upgrade and major renovation of the interior. Spaces to be renovated include the natatorium and pool, the entire lower level locker rooms, conference and fitness rooms, and a new academic support suite. Other areas include new seating and finishes in the arena as well as a new courtside members club; life safety and HVAC improvements to the Athletic Director’s suite, and a renovated Athletic Director’s Club on the 3rd level.
- Phase III begins shortly after Phase II completion with completion anticipated early 2011. Work will focus on exterior renovations and interior spaces such as the lobby and box office, a new concessions area, and the daily entry at 22nd and G Streets.

Smith/November 18, 2009: Phase II punch list efforts and corrective work are ongoing. Design is in progress for Phase III exterior and associated interior space.
Smith/November 11, 4 and October 7, 14, 21, 28 and September 30, 2009: Phase II punch list efforts and corrective work are ongoing. Remaining Phase II work on the Colonials Club is expected to deliver mid-fall.
Smith/September 16, 2009: Phase II punch list efforts and corrective work are ongoing and now include the Athletic Director’s Club. Remaining Phase II work on the Colonials Club is expected to deliver mid-fall prior to the first basketball game.
Smith/September 9, 2009: Phase II punch list efforts and corrective work are ongoing. Remaining Phase II work on the Athletic Director’s Club and Colonials Club are expected to deliver in mid-September and mid-fall prior to the first basketball game, respectively.
Smith/September 2, 2009: Phase II construction reached substantial completion August 24 with the exception of the Athletic Director’s Club and Colonials Club, which are expected to deliver in mid-September and mid-fall prior to the first basketball game, respectively. Additional punch list walkthroughs are underway on the lower level spaces, with corrective work to follow in coming weeks. Freshman Convocation occurred August 30 and was the debut of the renovated interior to 2,500 students and parents.
Smith/August 26, 2009: The majority of Phase II work is nearing completion. New arena seating will be completed this week with final cleaning and preparation work to accommodate GW’s annual Freshman Convocation on August 30, 2009. Work continues on schedule for level one and a punch list is being developed.
Smith/August 12, 2009: Work continues in all renovation areas with all construction trades working simultaneously. Final floor finishes are in progress on the arena floor.Bath fixtures are being installed on all floors and work is underway on ceilings and finishes. Tile work continues in the lower level natatorium.
Smith/August 5, 2009: Work continues in all renovation areas with all construction trades working simultaneously. First level bath fixtures are being installed and work is underway on ceilings and finishes. Arena level work continues and tile work is underway in the natatorium.
Smith/July 29, 2009: Work continues in all renovation areas with all construction trades working simultaneously. Work is underway to install new arena lighting and the Athletic Director's office has moved back to its suite with upgraded life safety components.
Smith/July 22, 2009: Work continues in all renovation areas with all construction trades working simultaneously. The new arena floor is complete except for installation of GW logo.
Smith/July 15, 2009: Work is well underway in all renovation areas. As all construction trades are working simultaneously, all levels of work are being undertaken. The new arena floor has been installed and graphics layout will follow next week. Finishes such as paint and tile have commenced and ceiling work is underway in the Athletic Director offices.
Smith/July 1, 2009: Miscellaneous concrete pads for mechanical equipment are being poured. Approved wall close-ins are progressing, as are plumbing rough-ins on arena level. Sprinkler installation main loop is complete, with branches and core distribution to follow. Arena floor layout is in progress.
Smith/June 24, 2009: Structural prep and balcony extension work continues. Painting of ceilings continues in the arena and is complete in the natatorium. Framing for Level 1 and the Athletic Director’s Club is nearing completion, as is natatorium ductwork. Installation of arena wood floor is in progress.
Smith/June 17, 2009: Structural prep and balcony extension work is in progress. Arena and natatorium ceilings are being painted. Framing for Level 1 and the Athletic Director’s Club is underway, as is natatorium ductwork. Installation of arena wood floor begins next week. Saturday work will continue.
Smith/June 10, 2009: Block walls and and framing are in progress. Piping rough-ins for mechanical electrical and plumbing infrastructure is ongoing. Saturday work will continue.
Smith/June 3, 2009: Wall layout and framing is in progress along with the piping rough-ins for mechanical electrical and plumbing infrastructures. Saturday work will continue.
Smith/May 27, 2009: Work progresses with continued demolition work as well as pouring slab on grade infill on the lower level and the pool deck. Wall layout and framing is in progress along with the piping rough-ins for mechanical electrical and plumbing infrastructures. Saturday work will continue.
Smith/May 20, 2009: Work progresses with continued demolition work as well as pouring slab on grade infill on the lower level and the pool deck. Wall layout and framing is in progress along with the piping rough-ins for mechanical electrical and plumbing infrastructures. Saturday work will continue.
Smith/May 13, 2009: Work continues to prepare the Smith Center for commencement activities. No construction activities will take place during commencement weekend. Parking on the north side of F Street adjacent to the south side of the building (2200 block of F Street) will be temporarily unavailable due to commencement-related deliveries.
Smith/May 6, 2009: Work continues to prepare the Smith Center for GW’s May 15-17 annual commencement activities, including installation of temporary stage and carpet. No construction activities will take place commencement weekend. Parking on the north side of F Street adjacent to the south side of the building (2200 block of F Street) will be temporarily unavailable as meters have been reserved for trucks providing equipment for commencement. During upcoming construction, the curb lane on F Street between 22nd & 23rd will continue to be used intermittently for concrete and material deliveries. Saturday work is expected to continue after commencement.
Smith/April 27, 2009: Upcoming work at the Smith Center will continue occasional use of the curb lane on F Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets for concrete and material deliveries. Demolition and layout for mechanical/electrical/plumbing (MEP) rough-ins continues in selected areas. Planning is underway to prepare the facility for annual commencement activities to occur the weekend of May 15-17. Saturday work is likely to continue before and after commencment weekend.
Smith/April 20, 2009: Upcoming work at the Smith Center will continue with temporary use of the curb lane on F Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets for concrete and material deliveries. Demolition, layout for mechanical/electrical/plumbing (MEP) rough-ins, and wall layout continues in selected areas. Saturday work is likely to continue. Sustainability alert: This project is actively separating construction waste from recyclable materials so you may notice dumpsters located on site that are designated for recycled materials only.
Smith/April 9, 2009: Upcoming work at the Smith Center will require temporary use of the curb lane on F Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets for concrete and material deliveries. Demolition of the interior partitions will continue; and once completed, the setting of sub-slab piping and infrastructure will commence.
